Established in 1999
Lomond Wine Estate sits on the Agulhas Plain near the southernmost tip of Africa — eight kilometres from the fishing village of Gansbaai and within sight of the sea where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet at Cape Agulhas. The estate takes its name from Ben Lomond Mountain in the Uilenkraal Valley, and its story begins in 1999 when Geoff McIver established the property with a conviction that this cool, windswept coastal terroir could produce wines of extraordinary character.
The location is extreme by South African wine standards. Prevailing winds blow directly off the ocean in both south-easterly and south-westerly directions, providing consistent coolness through summer months where temperatures seldom exceed thirty degrees Celsius. The vines are planted on as many as eighteen different soil types that appear naturally in small pockets along the slopes — fine kaolin clay, shale, sandstone and decomposed granite — producing intriguingly complex wines with flavour profiles that differ significantly from one block to the next.
Award-winning winemaker Hannes Meyer joined the team in 2018 and has already made his mark, clinching a 2019 FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 award. Hannes graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BSc in Viticulture and Oenology, then honed his skills at prominent Cape Winelands estates before bringing his expertise to this unique maritime terroir. Under his direction, Lomond produces a portfolio structured around single-vineyard wines and estate blends.
Each wine is named after a fynbos species endemic to the Cape Agulhas region — a tribute to the extraordinary biodiversity that surrounds the vineyards. Sugarbush is a single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from fine kaolin clay soils. Conebush takes its name from the vulnerable Dune Conebush endemic to Agulhas. Pincushion is a single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. Cat's Tail Vineyard Syrah and the Snowbush range complete a portfolio that reads like a field guide to the fynbos kingdom. The estate also produces MCC sparkling wines in both Brut and Brut Rose styles.
Beyond the cellar, Lomond offers villa accommodation, a restaurant serving South African cuisine, and cellar tours. The estate hosts weddings and events, and the tasting room is open daily. For wine lovers drawn to the idea of terroir shaped by ocean, wind and ancient soils at the very edge of the continent — where the vineyards can hear the crash of the surf and the air carries the salt of two oceans — Lomond delivers an experience unlike any other in the Cape.
