The name Ataraxia comes from the Greek, meaning a state of serene calmness -- and it perfectly captures the experience of arriving at The Skyfields Farm on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. At 300 metres above sea level, with 360-degree views sweeping from Babylonstoren mountain to the Atlantic, this is one of the most commanding vineyard sites in the Walker Bay. It is also one of the most geologically complex: fourteen distinct soil types have been identified on the 47-hectare property, from sandstone and Cape granite to Bokkeveld shale, each with origins stretching back over 100 million years.
Kevin Grant found this land after years of intimate familiarity with the Hemel-en-Aarde terroir. Born in Blantyre, Malawi, and educated at Rondebosch Boys High School in Cape Town, Grant graduated with a BSc Honours in Zoology from the University of Pretoria before following his true calling to wine. He completed a Diploma in Cellar Technology at Elsenburg Agricultural College as Dux student in 1990, then spent years as head winemaker at Hamilton Russell Vineyards -- the estate that put Hemel-en-Aarde on the world wine map. By the time he and his wife Hanli, together with a small group of friends, purchased The Skyfields in 2004, Grant had an encyclopaedic understanding of every ridge, slope, and soil pocket in the valley.
Grant describes himself as a 'dirt farmer' and a self-confessed terroiriste. His conviction is that wine quality is determined long before grapes reach the cellar -- by the land itself. At Ataraxia, this translates into meticulous vineyard work, organic-principled farming, and a small, focused range of hand-crafted wines: a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir, and the classically styled red blend Serenity. Each is an expression of site rather than winemaker ego. The Under the Gavel Chardonnay, produced exclusively for the Cape Winemakers Guild auction, is fermented with spontaneous yeast and made without malolactic fermentation or batonnage -- a purist's wine of remarkable precision.
The tasting room matches the wines in its understated elegance. Comfortable seating, curated art displays, and those extraordinary panoramic views create a space where visitors can slow down and pay attention. Knowledgeable staff guide tastings through the range at R80 per person, waived on wine purchase. A villa on the property offers accommodation, and the estate's dam and walking trails through indigenous fynbos provide reasons to linger. Ataraxia also participates in the Glamtrails hiking route, connecting the estate on foot to neighbouring Creation.
