Established in 2003
Elgin Vintners traces its roots to 1890, when the Elgin Orchards farm was first established as an apple-growing operation in the cool highlands east of Cape Town. For more than a century, the property produced fruit under the wide Overberg sky. It was only in the early 2000s that wine entered the picture — not as a romantic whim, but as a pragmatic response to a changing world.
Dr Max Hahn and James Rawbone-Viljoen, the founding partners, recognised that the apple industry was in decline, that global warming was shifting viticultural boundaries, and that expert opinion increasingly identified the Elgin Valley as one of South Africa's most promising cool-climate wine regions. The valley sits between 500 and 900 metres above sea level, encircled by the Kogelberg, Hottentots Holland and Groenland mountain ranges, with a growing season significantly longer and cooler than the warmer inland regions. In 2003 the first grapes were harvested, and Elgin Vintners was born.
The venture is structured as a partnership of six growers who have pooled their resources — vineyards, knowledge and capital — to produce wines that express the distinctive character of the Elgin terroir. It is a collaborative model that draws on the strengths of multiple sites and farming philosophies. Dr Marinda Kruger, a Master of Wine who trained across harvests in Australia and Europe, is the newest shareholder, bringing international perspective to the partnership.
Winemaker and business manager Augustus (Gus) Dale leads production. Dale learned his craft in the vineyards and cellars of Burgundy, and his passion for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — the classic cool-climate varieties — has shaped the Elgin Vintners style. The core range comprises six wines: Sauvignon Blanc, a Sauvignon Semillon blend, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Each benefits from the long, slow ripening that Elgin's cool climate affords, developing complex flavour profiles while retaining the fresh acidity that distinguishes the region from warmer South African appellations.
The estate operates a 4-star country guest house alongside the tasting room, offering visitors the chance to stay overnight and experience the Elgin Valley at different times of day. French-inspired cuisine is served on site, and the property's tennis court, scenic grounds and proximity to hiking trails make it a base for exploring the broader Overberg region.
Elgin Vintners is open seven days a week, 10:00 to 16:00, welcoming visitors for tastings of the full range. It is a place where a 130-year-old fruit farm has found a second life as one of Elgin's quietly accomplished wine producers.
