Established in 1702
High on the Durbanville hills, with sweeping views across Table Bay to the unmistakable silhouette of Table Mountain, Bloemendal Wine Estate has been cultivating the rich red soils of the Tygerberg Valley since 1702. It is one of the oldest continuously farmed properties in the Cape, established in the early eighteenth century to supply fresh produce to Cape Town and the Dutch East India Company ships sailing the spice route to and from India. The farm's 239 hectares include Kanonberg -- Canon Mountain -- from whose summit a cannon once signalled to Cape Town that fresh provisions were ready for collection.
The first wine cellar on the property was built in 1920 by Jannie van der Westhuizen, marking the beginning of Bloemendal's transition from a provisioning farm to a dedicated wine estate. His son deepened the commitment to viticulture by planting significant blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in the early 1960s, recognising the potential of the Durbanville terroir for red varieties. In 1987, Bloemendal was officially registered as an Estate, and that same year the first bottling of the Suider-Terras Sauvignon Blanc was released -- a wine that would go on to gain worldwide recognition and define the estate's reputation for decades.
The Durbanville wine region occupies a unique position in the Cape winelands. Situated just thirty minutes from Cape Town's city centre, the vineyards sit at elevations that catch the cooling influence of both Table Bay and False Bay, producing grapes with exceptional natural acidity and aromatic intensity. The predominantly French cultivars planted at Bloemendal -- Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz -- thrive in these conditions, producing wines that balance ripeness with freshness.
Today, winemaker Andri Hanekom crafts Bloemendal's wines in a boutique cellar, employing both old-world and modern techniques to create wines that reflect the distinct Durbanville terroir. The iconic Suider-Terras Sauvignon Blanc remains the estate's flagship, sourced from south-facing slopes that receive less direct sunlight and produce grapes of remarkable concentration. Multiple vintages have been honoured at competitions including the Vogue Wine and Spirits Awards and the Trophy Wine Show.
Beyond the cellar, Bloemendal has developed into a complete estate experience. The accommodation offering ranges from a luxurious 5-star cabin with panoramic views -- where guests receive a complimentary couples massage voucher, a welcome bottle of Bloemendal Methode Cap Classique, and a cheese platter -- to the historic Manor House with fully catered Mountain View and Garden View rooms, a self-catering loft, and a family suite. Each option is designed to immerse guests in the tranquillity of the Durbanville hills.
The estate offers two tasting experiences: the Super Premium range at R40 for four wines and the Ultra Premium range at R60 for four wines, making Bloemendal one of the most accessible tasting experiences in the Cape winelands. The combination of historic provenance, panoramic views, boutique winemaking, and comfortable accommodation makes Bloemendal a destination that rewards the journey from the city with a sense of timeless countryside calm.
