Brookdale Estate -- Old vines reborn, Mediterranean dining, and Paarl mountain views
Established in 2015
Brookdale Estate sits in the Klein Drakenstein foothills of Paarl, with the jagged peaks of the Hawequa mountains creating a dramatic backdrop behind the vineyards. For years the 67-hectare property languished as overgrown and forgotten vines, choked by alien vegetation. That changed in 2015 when the Rudd family from Britain acquired the country estate and saw an opportunity to build something exceptional from the ground up.
Before a single new vine could be planted, the alien vegetation and derelict vineyards had to be cleared -- a multi-year restoration project that sought to return the land to ecological balance. Indigenous fynbos gardens were established alongside the new, thoughtfully planted vineyards. Renowned South African winemaker Duncan Savage was hired as consultant, and together with the Rudds he embarked on a vineyard revitalisation programme with an emphasis on sustainability and exploring the terroir of old Paarl.
The wine vision at Brookdale is distinctive: to explore the lesser-known varietals of Portugal, Italy, and France in a South African setting. The estate produces two ranges. The Mason Road label offers approachable, everyday wines -- a Syrah, Chenin Blanc, Serendipity Rose, and GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) -- named after a historic road on the property. The Brookdale label represents the premium tier, with an old-vine Chenin Blanc of particular note for its mineral structure and granitic freshness.
Xander Sadie joined as head winemaker in time for the 2025 harvest, assisted by Shanice du Preez. His arrival signals the estate's ambition to move into the upper echelons of Cape wine. The approach in the cellar complements the careful vineyard work: gentle extraction, natural fermentation, and minimal intervention.
The Bistro at Brookdale has quickly become one of Paarl's most talked-about dining destinations. Chef Gary Coetzee crafts menus with heart -- Mediterranean-inspired dishes served in a warm, welcoming setting with views over the vineyards to the Drakenstein peaks. The Tasting Room offers wine flights paired with artisanal dips in the Mason Road Sip & Dip experience at R180 per person. The estate also operates the Manor House for luxury accommodation, with booking through Nightsbridge. The estate is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00, with extended evening hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It is wheelchair accessible and family-friendly.
