Imbuko -- Family vintners from rootstock to wine, Wellington since 2004
Established in 2004
Imbuko means 'admiration for' in Xhosa, one of South Africa's official languages and the mother tongue of Nelson Mandela. The name captures the spirit of a family-owned wine business that has grown from humble beginnings into one of Wellington's most versatile wine operations. Founded in 2004 by co-founder and Managing Director Theunis van Zyl, who brings over thirty years of wine industry experience, Imbuko started with a first order of 50,000 litres of bulk Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. From those straightforward beginnings, the company evolved into a respected force supplying wine products and services across the fast-moving South African wine industry.
Imbuko operates from the farm Uitkyk near Wellington in the heart of the Boland winelands. The farm is one of the few in South Africa that cultivates rootstock -- not only for its own use but for a significant portion of the national wine industry. This gives Imbuko an unusual degree of control over the entire production chain, from rootstock to vine and from vine to wine. While the estate's own vineyards are in Wellington, wines are also sourced and blended from prominent Western Cape regions including Stellenbosch, Paarl, Tulbagh, Worcester and the Breede River Valley, ensuring diversity of style and consistent availability.
The wine portfolio spans multiple ranges: the Du Plevaux label, the Imbuko estate range, Van Zijl Family Vintners, Shortwood, Makulu, the Fair Trade-certified Rebourne and the organic Releaf. This breadth reflects both the company's commercial acumen and its commitment to different segments of the wine market. The estate holds organic accreditation and is recognised as a specialist in Cap Classique, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Rose, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and sweet wines.
The tasting room on Bo-Dal Road welcomes visitors with warmth and informality. Bookings are essential, and experiences range from standard wine tastings to pie and wine pairings, pizza and wine, and Pomula Craft Wine Spritzer with macaron pairings. The estate is thoroughly family-friendly, with a jungle gym for children, free WiFi, fireplaces for winter visits and expansive grassy areas for summer. Platters, snacks, milkshakes and even craft beer round out the offering.
Imbuko's business philosophy centres on the Zulu concept of ubuntu -- communal values expressed through quality, loyalty and integrity in long-term client relationships. The company also holds heritage estate status from Wine of Origin and is accredited for organic production, reflecting an operation that balances commercial scale with conscientious farming. From a rootstock nursery to a welcoming tasting room with mountain views, Imbuko brings an unusual combination of depth and diversity to Wellington's wine scene.
Co-founder and Managing Director Theunis van Zyl has spent over thirty years in wine production and oversees Imbuko's winemaking across multiple ranges. His hands-on approach spans the full production chain -- from rootstock cultivation to blending and bottling.
