Established in 1918
KWV is not merely a wine brand — it is a chapter of South African history. On 8 January 1918, wine farmers across the Western Cape united under the banner of the Ko-operatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika, a cooperative founded by Dr Charles Kohler to stabilise an industry devastated by the Boer War and World War I. From its Paarl headquarters, KWV grew into the single most powerful institution in South African wine, regulating production, setting minimum prices, and driving exports for the better part of a century.
The cellar complex that houses the KWV Emporium today occupies over 22 hectares in the heart of Paarl, making it one of the largest in the world. Its centrepiece is the Cathedral Cellar, built in 1930 and widely regarded as one of the most beautiful wine cellars on earth. Massive carved vats line the hall, each depicting a scene from the history of wine at the Cape — from the arrival of the first vines to the founding of KWV itself. Walking through the Cathedral Cellar is a pilgrimage into South African wine heritage.
KWV crafted its first brandy in 1926, and the spirit programme has become a cornerstone of the brand. The House of Fire brandy distillery invites visitors on a sensory journey through the art of pot-still distillation. A devastating fire once swept through the KWV cellars in Stellenbosch, and a single barrel of brandy was salvaged and transported to Paarl. That barrel was later blended into the KWV Centenary Brandy alongside the very first brandy made in 1926 — a symbol of resilience and continuity.
The wine portfolio spans multiple tiers. The Classic Collection offers accessible everyday wines. Cathedral Cellar honours the iconic cellar with premium, barrel-aged reds and whites. Roodeberg, first blended in 1949, is one of South Africa's oldest and most recognisable wine brands. At the pinnacle, The Mentors is a boutique cellar programme of eight wines — including the Orchestra Bordeaux blend, the Perold Pinotage, and single-varietal Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot — crafted by a dedicated winemaking team.
The renovated KWV Emporium offers an array of tasting experiences, from sparkling wines and natural wines to fortified wines, liqueurs and brandies. Monthly winemaker-led tours provide technical depth, while the Build Your Own Brandy Blend experience lets visitors craft, bottle and personalise their own creation. Cellar tours conducted in English and German take guests through barrel maturation cellars and into the Cathedral Cellar itself.
KWV's wines are crafted by a dedicated team of winemakers working across the various tiers, from the Classic Collection through to The Mentors boutique cellar programme. The Mentors team focuses on small-batch, site-specific wines that push the boundaries of South African winemaking.
