Le Manoir de Brendel sits on approximately 30 hectares of vineyards in the Franschhoek Valley, just five minutes' drive from the village, with the Klein Drakenstein Mountains rising behind the property. It is a family-owned estate where all grapes are still harvested by hand, and the annual production is around 2,500 bottles -- making it one of the smaller working wineries in the valley.
The estate's roots connect to the broader Franschhoek story that began with the arrival of the French Huguenots in 1688. The property sits on the R45, the main artery of the Franschhoek wine valley, and its name evokes the manor house tradition of French country estates. The Brendel range of wines stands for attention to detail according to centuries-old winemaking tradition.
Accommodation is a core part of the Le Manoir experience. Guests choose from ten luxurious suites and two family cottages, all serviced daily and equipped with air-conditioning, DSTV, DVD player, minibar, tea and coffee facilities, a safe, hairdryer, gowns, slippers and luxury bathroom amenities. Continental and hot breakfast is included, served overlooking the Klein Drakenstein Mountains.
The grape varieties cultivated on the estate include Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay. The Consuls Reserve, a red blend, is a notable label in the range. Wine tasting is available on the garden patio, with views across the vineyards and surrounding mountains, at R50 per person for five wines. If you buy a case, the tasting fee is waived and the reds are offered at R99 per bottle. Older vintages -- including 2011, 2008 and even 2006 releases -- are sometimes available at the cellar door at prices that reward the curious.
The mild, sunny climate in the shadow of the mountains suits a broad range of varieties. The 30 hectares of vineyard are large enough to produce variety but small enough to maintain the personal attention that hand-harvesting demands. With annual production of around 2,500 bottles, each vintage is a genuinely limited release.
Beyond the wine, Le Manoir offers a 1.2-kilometre walking trail through the vineyards and a clay tennis court overlooking the vines. The property also features a spa, adding a further dimension to what is fundamentally a place of quiet, unhurried retreat.
Le Manoir de Brendel is not a high-volume destination. It is a small, family-run estate where the emphasis is on personal service, handcrafted wine, and the extraordinary setting of the Franschhoek Valley. For visitors seeking an intimate base in the winelands with the village minutes away, it is a refined and peaceful choice.
