Lord's Wines — Wine and bistro in Robertson
Established in 2006
Lord's Wines is nestled in glorious isolation at the end of a ten-kilometre dirt road outside McGregor, high up in the McGregor Mountains at 500 metres above sea level. The name is no accident: viticulturist Jacie Oosthuizen founded the winery in 2006 by joining his two great passions -- cricket and wine. The whole concept is built around Lord's Cricket Ground in London, and the cricketing theme runs through everything from the tasting room decor to the wine labels.
Oosthuizen identified 13 hectares of cool-climate terroir at altitude, among the highest vineyard plantings in the region, where he planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and built his cellar. Pinot Noir was the first grape brought into the cellar with the maiden 2006 harvest, and it remains the estate's signature variety. The elevation, combined with significant diurnal temperature variation and the sheltered mountain setting, creates conditions more commonly associated with Burgundy than the Robertson Wine Valley -- producing wines of finesse rather than power.
The wine range has expanded to include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir Rose alongside the flagship Pinot Noir. Two Methode Cap Classique sparkling wines complete the portfolio: a Brut blending Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the classic tradition, and a Brut Rose made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir. The 2015 Chardonnay won a gold award, and the 2016 vintage followed with an even stronger showing.
The on-site Blue Crane Bistro offers light lunches with panoramic views across the McGregor valley and surrounding mountains. The bistro takes its name from the Blue Crane, South Africa's national bird, which is frequently spotted on the property. Visitors reach the estate along a scenic dirt road that passes through indigenous fynbos and open farmland, arriving at an oasis of lush green lawns, sweeping vistas, and native vegetation.
Self-catering accommodation is available in elegantly decorated apartments and houses on the property, allowing guests to stay overnight and explore the surrounding McGregor countryside. Lord's also operates as a function venue with a 150-seat space featuring panoramic mountain views, suitable for weddings and private events.
As a family-run operation, the Oosthuizens pride themselves on making visitors feel like part of the wine family. Wine tastings and guided cellar tours are available, and the combination of altitude, isolation, mountain scenery, and genuinely personal hospitality makes Lord's one of the most distinctive and rewarding wine destinations in the Western Cape. The estate is a member of the McGregor Wine Meander.
Jacie Oosthuizen is the founder, viticulturist, and driving force behind Lord's Wines. He identified the 500-metre altitude McGregor Mountain site for its cool-climate potential, planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, built the cellar, and produced the maiden 2006 vintage. His dual passion for cricket and wine is woven into every aspect of the estate.
