Established in 1948
McGregor Winery was founded in 1948 by a group of local grape farmers who pooled their resources to create a cooperative cellar at the southern end of the Robertson Wine Valley. Nearly eight decades later, the winery remains collectively owned by thirty-three farming families who cultivate approximately 14,000 tons of grapes annually from the fertile soils surrounding the charming village of McGregor.
The village itself sits nestled between the picturesque hills of the Riviersonderend Mountains, and the winery draws on a terroir defined by the region's distinctive calcrete soils -- white limestone deposits believed to be ancient marine remains, rich in calcium carbonate. These soils contribute a mineral quality to the wines that is unique to the Robertson Valley, and the Calcrete Chardonnay has become the winery's signature expression of this distinctive earth.
Under winemaker Prieur du Plessis, whose innovative approach and deep respect for tradition have elevated the winery's profile, the team produces nearly ten million litres of wine each year for both local and international markets. Viticulturist Jaco Lategan works closely with the member farmers, responsible for grape selection and ensuring only the best fruit from across the cooperative's holdings makes it into the cellar for bottled production.
The wine range spans both reds and whites, reflecting the breadth of what the Robertson Valley can produce. On the red side, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage form the core offerings. The white portfolio includes Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay, with a full-bodied blend of Colombard and Chardonnay rounding out the range. Pricing is accessible, a reflection of the cooperative model and the winery's commitment to making good wine available to all.
Visitors to the tasting room can sample the full range and enjoy one of McGregor's most distinctive experiences: wine and ice-cream pairings, a playful combination that has become a talking point for visitors exploring the quieter end of the Robertson Valley. Guided tours of the winery and cellars are available for those who want to learn about the techniques and processes behind the wines. The winery is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00.
McGregor itself is a village of whitewashed cottages, art studios, and unhurried pace -- a destination for travellers seeking something gentler than the busier wine routes. The winery sits at the heart of that community, a cooperative in the best sense: farmers working together to harness a unique terroir, producing honest, well-made wines that reflect both the village and the valley that surrounds it.
