McGregor Koop Wynmakery — Rooted in Western Cape since 2020
Established in 1948
McGregor Winery was founded in 1948 by a group of local grape farmers who pooled their resources to create a cooperative cellar at the southern end of the Robertson Wine Valley. Nearly eight decades later, the winery remains collectively owned by thirty-three farming families who cultivate approximately fourteen thousand tons of grapes annually from the fertile soils surrounding the charming village of McGregor.
The village itself sits nestled between the picturesque hills of the Riviersonderend Mountains, on a byroad of another byroad — a geographic remoteness that has preserved McGregor's unhurried character. The winery draws on a terroir defined by the region's distinctive calcrete soils: white limestone deposits believed to be ancient marine remains, rich in calcium carbonate. These soils contribute a mineral quality to the wines that is unique to the Robertson Valley, and the Calcrete Chardonnay has become the winery's signature expression of this distinctive earth.
Under winemaker Prieur du Plessis, whose innovative approach and deep respect for tradition have elevated the winery's profile, the team produces nearly ten million litres of wine each year for both local and international markets. Viticulturist Jaco Lategan works closely with the member farmers, responsible for grape selection and ensuring only the best fruit from across the cooperative's holdings makes it into the cellar for bottled production.
In 2019, McGregor Winery and Roodezandt Co-op decided to join forces, and after a period of alignment on shared values and vision, Roodezandt RF was formally established in 2020. The merger brought together two Robertson Valley cooperatives with complementary strengths, while McGregor retained its distinct identity and wine range.
The wine range spans reds and whites. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage form the core red offerings; Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay anchor the whites, with a Colombard-Chardonnay blend rounding out the range. Pricing is accessible — a reflection of the cooperative model and the commitment to making good wine available to all.
Visitors to the tasting room can sample the full range and enjoy wine and ice-cream pairings, a playful combination that has become a talking point for visitors exploring the quieter end of the Robertson Valley. Guided cellar tours are available. The winery is open Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 13:00.
McGregor itself is a village of whitewashed cottages, art studios, and unhurried pace — a destination for travellers seeking something gentler than the busier wine routes. The winery sits at the heart of that community, a cooperative in the truest sense: farmers working together to produce honest wines that reflect both the village and the valley.
Prieur du Plessis leads the winemaking at McGregor Winery, bringing an innovative approach grounded in deep respect for tradition. Working alongside viticulturist Jaco Lategan, he oversees the production of nearly ten million litres of wine annually from the cooperative's thirty-three member farms.
