Established in 2016
Le Grand Domaine sits at the top of Devon Valley, one of Stellenbosch's most scenic and viticulturally distinguished sub-regions, overlooking the majestic Stellenbosch mountains. The estate is the premium flagship of Origin Wine, a South African wine company with operations in Argentina and Switzerland, and represents founder Bernard Fontannaz's ambition to create a South African chateau in the Bordeaux tradition.
Fontannaz acquired Le Grand Domaine in 2016 with a clear vision: plant only classic Bordeaux varietals -- Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc -- from carefully selected clones and rootstock, and produce wines that could compete at the highest international level. The chateau concept was deliberate, introducing a framework that speaks to wine consumers around the world in a language they recognise as signifying premium quality.
The vision found its winemaker in Debbie Thompson, appointed in early 2020 after twenty years at Simonsig under the mentorship of legendary winemaker Johan Malan. Thompson brought deep Stellenbosch experience and has already racked up numerous awards. The Grand Vin de Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon was named best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world at the 2025 International Wine Challenge, winning both the International Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy and the South African Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy for the 2022 vintage. The Pledge Our Darling Sauvignon Blanc earned double gold at the Veritas Awards for both the 2020 and 2021 vintages, and several wines received four-and-a-half star ratings in Platter's by Diners Club.
The estate produces two main ranges. The Grand Vin de Stellenbosch collection is the pinnacle, featuring varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend from the Devon Valley estate vineyards, alongside a Sauvignon Blanc and a Viognier. The Pledge range, positioned in the premium bracket, offers wines sourced from specific sites across the Western Cape -- each bottling focused on delivering the best expression of a varietal, a terroir, or a winemaking technique. Well-known Stellenbosch vintner Deon Joubert contributes viticultural guidance to the operation.
Devon Valley is one of Stellenbosch's best-kept secrets, both scenically and viticulturally. The soils here -- decomposed granite and shale -- combined with the valley's sheltered aspect and moderate temperatures, produce red wines of exceptional depth and structure. Fontannaz recognised this potential and chose the hilltop site specifically for its ability to grow world-class Bordeaux varieties in a South African context.
Le Grand Domaine's Devon Valley setting provides a commanding view across Stellenbosch and the surrounding mountains. The estate operates a tasting room and the Le Grand Jardin restaurant. Visitors can taste the full range of Grand Vin and Pledge wines while taking in one of the finest vistas in the winelands. The combination of an internationally recognised winemaking team, a focused Bordeaux varietal programme, and a location that ranks among the most beautiful in the Cape makes Le Grand Domaine a compelling stop on any Stellenbosch visit.
