Established in 1937
In 1937, Hennie Retief senior acquired a farm in the Robertson Wine Valley and named it Van Loveren, after Christina van Loveren -- an ancestor of his new bride, Jean van Zyl. From that modest beginning on the banks of the Breede River, the Retief family has built what is now South Africa's largest independent, family-owned wine company. The transformation accelerated when the third generation took the helm in 2006: four cousins -- Hennie, Bussell, Neil, and Phillip Retief -- each bringing distinct skills. Hennie and Neil manage the vineyards, Bussell is the winemaker, and Phillip runs the commercial operations.
Today Van Loveren's reach extends far beyond Robertson. The family owns vineyards and interests in Stellenbosch, Paarl, Swartland, Tradouw, and Worcester, and exports to over 70 countries. Their portfolio spans an extraordinary breadth: from the premium Christina single-vineyard heritage range named after the original Christina van Loveren, through the Retief Reserve family collection first released in 2017, the estate Van Loveren Heritage range, the Zandvliet estate wines, the Neil Ellis range, and the conservation-focused Rhino Run, down to everyday favourites like Four Cousins -- South Africa's biggest-selling bottled wine brand, launched in 2000 in 1.5-litre bottles and an instant phenomenon. The Papillon sparkling range, Absolute Zero and Almost Zero alcohol-free lines, and Tangled Tree eco range round out one of the most diverse portfolios in the country.
At the Robertson home farm, the visitor experience is centred around Christina's Bistro, a relaxed restaurant specialising in thin-crusted wood-fired pizzas, gourmet burgers, and seasonal chef's specialities. Wine tastings offer a curated selection of four VRL wines for R75 per person, while the Christina and Chocolate Pairing at R185 pairs premium wines with handcrafted chocolates. Cellar tours run on weekdays and include a Cap Classique tasting. Beyond wine, visitors can walk the 7.5-kilometre Fish Eagle hiking trail, join a garden tour through the estate grounds, or browse the Klipheuwel Farm Stall.
Van Loveren has earned the 1659 Visionary Leadership Award and Carbon Hero recognition from Blue North Sustainability, reflecting genuine commitment to environmental stewardship alongside commercial success. The estate is family-friendly with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that belies the scale of the operation behind it. With a 4.3-star Google rating from 166 reviews at the Worcester tasting room, Van Loveren proves that South Africa's largest family winery can still feel intimate.
Bussell Retief is the winemaker at Van Loveren, working alongside his cousins Hennie and Neil (viticulturists) and Phillip (commercial director). As one of the four third-generation Retief cousins running the family business since 2006, Bussell oversees winemaking across a vast portfolio ranging from the premium Christina Heritage single-vineyard wines to the hugely popular Four Cousins brand.
