PaardenKloof -- "Valley of the Horses" -- takes its name from the natural amphitheatre of land nestled between the northern foothills of Attacquas Kloof, Mount Babylon, and Blaauw Kop Mountain in the Bot River district of Walker Bay. For most of its history, PaardenKloof was a sheep and fruit farm. It was only at the beginning of this century that vineyards were planted on its slopes, transforming a pastoral property into one of the Overberg's most compelling boutique wine estates.
The estate sits on 36 hectares of vineyards rooted in ancient soils that shape the distinctive character of its wines. The geological diversity is remarkable for a single property: shale, Table Mountain sandstone, koffieklip, granite, and ancient clay soils all contribute different mineral signatures to the wines. The maritime influence from Walker Bay, combined with the surrounding fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom, produces a cool-climate growing environment that gives the wines elegant acidity, refined tannins, and aromatic expressions of wild herbs and earth.
PaardenKloof's winemaking team reflects a deliberate approach to quality over volume. Viticulturist Kevin Watt manages the low-yielding vineyards to maintain exclusivity. Kobie Viljoen crafts the Bordeaux-style reds -- Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir -- while Stefan Gerber oversees the Sauvignon Blanc production. This division of expertise allows each varietal to receive specialist attention.
The wines were released under the PaardenKloof Estate label beginning in 2013, after years of patient slow maturation. The estate produces limited-edition single-vineyard varietals of ultra-premium quality: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, and MCC. Every bottle reflects the philosophy of allowing the ancient soils and cool maritime climate to speak through restrained, terroir-driven winemaking.
The estate offers wine and food pairing experiences and operates a tasting room in the nearby Bot River village at the Bot River Hotel, 14 Bot River Square. The setting on the Babilonstoring mountain slopes provides sweeping views across the Bot River valley. PaardenKloof also provides accommodation, making it a destination for visitors exploring the Walker Bay wine route.
Bot River itself is a small, unhurried village on the R43 between the N2 highway and Kleinmond, increasingly recognised as a satellite of the Walker Bay wine district with its own distinct identity. Several rivers cross the PaardenKloof property, and the natural fynbos vegetation surrounding the vineyards contributes to the herbal, earthy complexity in the wines. This is a quiet, serious wine estate -- no crowds, no theme-park attractions. PaardenKloof exists for the wine, the ancient soils, and the unhurried pace of Bot River.
