Established in 1867
In 1867, Jacobus Stephanus de Wet bought a farm on the outskirts of Ashton in the Robertson Valley and named it Zandvliet — 'sandy plain' — for the alluvial soils that the Breede River had deposited over millennia. But beneath that sandy surface lay something extraordinary: ancient limestone formations, rocky outcrops dating to the Upper Jurassic period, and the geological anomaly known as the Hill of Enon. The De Wet family would farm Zandvliet for four generations and 148 years, establishing it as one of the most historically significant wine estates in South Africa.
The story of Zandvliet is, above all, the story of Shiraz. The first Shiraz vines were planted on the estate during the 1870s, making Zandvliet one of the very first farms in South Africa to cultivate and bottle this variety. While Shiraz would eventually sweep through the Cape Winelands and become one of the country's signature red grapes, Zandvliet was there at the beginning — and the estate has never stopped refining its expression of the grape in Robertson terroir.
In 2015, ANB Investments (the Van Loveren family group) acquired Zandvliet from the De Wet family. Under new ownership, winemaker Jacques Cilliers has revived the estate to its former glory, producing premium, award-winning Shiraz wines that honour the property's pioneering legacy while pushing quality further. The flagship Kalkveld Shiraz — named for the limestone-rich 'chalk field' vineyard on the southern slope of the Hill of Enon — has become the estate's defining wine. The Hill of Enon range, including both a Small Berry Pick Shiraz and a Chardonnay, draws fruit from the ancient rocky outcrop at the estate's heart, where limestone patches and unique geology create wines of rare depth and mineral complexity.
The Kalkveld Lounge is an intricately designed tasting room inspired by and named for the flagship wine. Visitors taste against a backdrop of vineyards, cellar buildings, and the farmland scenery of the Breede River Valley. Beyond the tasting room, Zandvliet offers guided cellar tours, private tutored tastings, vineyard tours, and fine dining that showcases the estate wines alongside seasonal produce.
