Established in 1692
The story of Rhebokskloof begins on 19 August 1692, when Governor Simon van der Stel granted a free parcel of land to Dirk van Schalkwyk in the Agter-Paarl valley. The farm was formally established in 1797, and for more than two centuries it has witnessed the evolution of South African viticulture from its sheltered position beneath the granite peaks of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve.
The modern era at Rhebokskloof is the work of Albie Laker, whose eighteen-year transformation has turned the property into one of the most complete wine destinations in the Paarl region. Laker's vision combined the agricultural heritage of the estate with a residential development that preserved the natural beauty of the valley -- east-, west- and north-facing slopes framed by decomposed granite and black marble soils that give each vineyard block a distinct character.
At the heart of the cellar stands Rolanie Lotz, a born-and-bred Paarl local who joined Rhebokskloof in 2007 and has since established herself as one of South Africa's leading female winemakers. Lotz is especially renowned for her Rhone-style wines, with Shiraz as her signature, but her range extends across Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Mouvedre, Durif, and Carignan. All grapes are handpicked and hand-sorted so that only the finest bunches enter the cellar for fermentation and maturation.
The wine portfolio spans three tiers. The Flatrock Range offers accessible, fruit-driven wines designed for everyday enjoyment -- versatile varietals that are expressive and approachable. The Rhebokskloof Range is the signature collection, showcasing the diversity of the estate's vineyards through single-varietal wines and thoughtful blends. At the pinnacle sits the Black Marble Hill Range, named after the distinctive dark soils of the estate's most prized vineyard blocks, where meticulous winemaking produces wines of complexity, elegance, and depth. The Black Marble Hill Syrah Reserve has become the estate's calling card, consistently earning critical acclaim.
Dining at Rhebokskloof revolves around two restaurants. El Picoteo serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and wood-fired pizzas prepared from fresh local ingredients, while Lume offers a fine dining experience. Both benefit from al fresco terraces overlooking the vineyards, and the estate also offers scenic picnic experiences among the vines.
Beyond wine and food, Rhebokskloof is a genuine outdoor destination. Mountain biking and hiking trails wind through the estate's natural fynbos landscape within the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. The estate is family-friendly and wheelchair accessible, welcoming visitors of all ages. Wine tastings include a Flatrock and Rhebokskloof flight of five wines or a focused Black Marble Hill premium tasting of three wines, with chocolate pairing also available.
