Simonsvlei Wines — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Paarl
Established in 1945
In 1945, as South Africa emerged from the uncertainties of the post-war years, a group of grape farmers in the Paarl Valley pooled their resources to found a cooperative winery. Their ambition was straightforward: produce quality wine in volume at prices ordinary people could afford. They named it Simonsvlei — a tribute to Simon van der Stel, the Dutch governor who planted the Cape's first vineyards in the seventeenth century, and the vlei (wetlands) that graced the surrounding landscape at the foot of the Simonsberg mountain.
Co-founder Sonny le Roux and his partner Oom Sarel brought decades of viticultural knowledge to the venture. From those earliest harvests, the wines earned recognition at regional and national competitions, establishing a reputation that belied the cooperative's modest origins. Over the following decades, Simonsvlei grew steadily, drawing grapes from an expanding network of member farms across the Paarl Valley.
Today, Simonsvlei receives approximately 9,000 metric tons of grapes from 36 member farms, working with varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, and Sauvignon Blanc. The portfolio is structured across several tiers: the accessible Lifestyle range for everyday drinking, the Hercules Paragon range for mid-tier complexity, and limited special releases that showcase the best of the Paarl terroir.
In 2023, Simonsvlei underwent a radical transformation, repositioning itself as a lifestyle destination rather than simply a production cellar. The tasting room was reimagined, and the estate now offers wine-and-food pairing experiences, a gift shop stocked with estate products, and event spaces set against the dramatic backdrop of the Simonsberg. The cellar door is open seven days a week, making it one of the most accessible stops on the Paarl Wine Route.
What sets Simonsvlei apart from many cooperatives is its balance of scale and quality. The winemaking team draws on nearly eight decades of blending expertise to produce wines that consistently over-deliver for their price point. The Hercules Paragon Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz have earned particular praise for their concentration and oak integration, while the Lifestyle Chenin Blanc remains one of the Paarl Valley's best-value whites.
The name Simonsvlei itself carries historical weight. Simon van der Stel was the Dutch colonial governor who established the Cape's first successful vineyards in the late seventeenth century, and the vlei — or wetlands — that once dotted the valley floor speak to a landscape shaped by water and agriculture long before the first cooperative vines were crushed.
For visitors, Simonsvlei offers an unpretentious, family-friendly introduction to the Paarl wine region — a place where the cooperative spirit that built the South African wine industry is still very much alive, and where quality has never been sacrificed for scale.
