Established in 1937
In 1937, Hennie Retief senior acquired a modest farm on the banks of the Breede River in the Robertson Wine Valley. His new bride, Jean van Zyl, persuaded him to rename the property after her ancestor Christina van Loveren, a Dutch settler who arrived at the Cape in 1699 with her husband Willem van Zyl. That gesture of honouring family heritage set the tone for everything that followed.
In the early decades, Van Loveren made sweet wines and brandy. When Hennie's sons Nico and Wynand joined the operation in the 1960s, they modernised the cellar and began producing noble cultivars for the wholesale trade. By 1980, Van Loveren became one of the first wine farms in Robertson to bottle and sell wine under its own label -- a pivotal decision that transformed the farm from a supplier into a brand.
The real acceleration came in 2006, when the third generation of Retiefs took the helm. Four cousins -- Hennie, Bussell, Neil, and Phillip -- each brought distinct skills to the business. Hennie and Neil manage the vineyards, Bussell is the winemaker, and Phillip oversees the commercial side. In 2000, they had already launched Four Cousins, a natural sweet wine in 1.5-litre bottles that became an instant phenomenon and is now South Africa's biggest-selling bottled wine brand.
Today Van Loveren is the country's largest independent, family-owned wine company, exporting to over 70 countries. The portfolio is extraordinarily broad: the premium Christina Heritage single-vineyard range honours the original Christina van Loveren; the Retief Reserve collection launched in 2017 celebrates over 80 years of family heritage; and the core Van Loveren Heritage range showcases Robertson terroir. Beyond the family brands, their interests extend to the Zandvliet estate, the Neil Ellis range, the conservation-focused Rhino Run, the Papillon sparkling range, and the Tangled Tree eco wines. The Absolute Zero and Almost Zero alcohol-free lines reflect ongoing innovation.
The family also pioneered the vine-by-post grape trellis system in Robertson, a testament to their commitment to advancing viticulture in the valley. Van Loveren has earned the 1659 Visionary Leadership Award and Carbon Hero recognition from Blue North Sustainability.
At the Robertson home farm, visitors experience this vast enterprise in a surprisingly intimate setting. Christina's Bistro serves wood-fired pizzas, gourmet burgers, and seasonal specials in a relaxed atmosphere. Wine tastings offer a curated flight of four wines for R75, while the Christina and Chocolate Pairing at R185 matches premium wines with handcrafted chocolates. Guided cellar tours run on weekdays and include a Cap Classique tasting. The 7.5-kilometre Fish Eagle hiking trail winds through the estate with birdwatching opportunities, and the Klipheuwel Farm Stall offers local produce and gifts. It is a family estate in the truest sense -- three generations deep, a relaxed welcome, and a winery whose reach belies its warmth.
Bussell Retief is the winemaker at Van Loveren, working alongside his cousins Hennie and Neil (viticulturists) and Phillip (commercial director). As one of the four third-generation Retief cousins running the family business since 2006, Bussell oversees winemaking across a vast portfolio ranging from the premium Christina Heritage single-vineyard wines to the hugely popular Four Cousins brand. He has built an international reputation for award-winning wines.
