Established in 2011
Three generations of the Teubes family have been making wine on the banks of the Olifants River outside Vredendal for over three decades. Grandfather Sybrand Teubes laid the foundation, his son Johan expanded the ambition, and grandson Sybrand continues the tradition from their cellar at Houmoed, first established in 2011 and equipped with modern winemaking machinery to ensure top-quality production.
Teubes Family Wines is a premium organic estate and organic grape supplier -- one of the few certified organic producers in the Olifants River Valley. The vineyards run alongside the river, benefiting from alluvial soils and the warm, dry West Coast climate that produces intensely flavoured grapes with natural concentration. The family's passion for perfection has translated into multiple international wine awards across their portfolio.
The wine range is built around four distinct labels. The flagship Teubes Signature Organic range represents the estate's finest expressions. The Malkopbaai range, named after a local landmark, has earned a reputation as a go-to summer wine, with the Malkopbaai Sauvignon Blanc a particular crowd-pleaser. The Karoobossie label produces both still wines and a Kap Klassiek Brut sparkling wine. The Sir Lambert range completes the portfolio with additional varietals. Across all ranges, the family focuses on Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage -- the core varieties that thrive in this terroir.
The visitor experience at Teubes is warm and unhurried. The spacious tasting room, with its French-inspired architecture, offers a luxurious atmosphere for sampling the range. Wine tasting of four wines costs R40 per person, six wines at R60, and the full range at R70. Cellar tours take visitors through the modern production facility, and olive tastings showcase another side of the farm's output. Light lunches are served daily, including juicy beef burgers and tender calamari, with pizzas available on weekends by advance booking.
Teubes Family Wines also operates a tasting room in Lambert's Bay on the West Coast, giving visitors exploring the coastal route a chance to taste the range without the detour inland to Vredendal. Whether you encounter them at the cellar door or at the coast, the Teubes family delivers an authentic West Coast wine experience rooted in organic farming and three generations of accumulated knowledge.
