Zoetendal Vineyards & River Estate — Chardonnay and more in Western Cape
Established in 2004
Zoetendal Vineyards and River Estate lies on the banks of the Nuwejaars River, next to the picturesque mission village of Elim and only twenty kilometres from the southernmost tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. It is one of the most remote wine estates in the Western Cape, and one of the most distinctive -- a place where coastal winds, ancient koffieklip soils, and the slow rhythm of the Overberg converge in a landscape that feels untouched by time.
The story begins in 1996 when Johan de Kock planted the first vines in the Elim ward, becoming one of the pioneers of this cool-climate frontier. The farm became a boutique cellar in 2004, and Zoetendal's origins are rooted in resilience and survival. The Elim region's demanding conditions -- relentless coastal breezes from both oceans, low rainfall, and koffieklip-rich soils that force vines to struggle for every drop of moisture -- produce grapes of extraordinary concentration and character. The estate's fifteen hectares of vineyards yield wines with a depth of flavour that speaks directly to this extreme terroir.
Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah are the two principal cultivars grown on the farm, both ideally suited to the cool, wind-swept conditions. The limited-edition Sauvignon Blanc has become a benchmark for the Elim ward, while the Syrah delivers a peppery, medium-bodied expression quite unlike the warmer-climate Shirazes found further north. The range also includes a Chenin Blanc and the Monarch series, a premium tier that represents the finest parcels from select vintages.
But Zoetendal is far more than a cellar door. The estate has been developed as a complete river retreat. Luxurious accommodation is available in the gracious old Manor House, a six-bedroom villa furnished with queen and double beds, each bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and a full breakfast prepared by a private chef served at the villa. The Nuwejaars River winds through the property, opening up a world of activities: canoeing, catch-and-release fishing, birdwatching from the riverbank, and game drives through the surrounding fynbos. Hiking and mountain biking trails extend across the estate, and riverfront picnics are a signature experience.
The tasting room is open Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00, offering an intimate setting where Johan de Kock often hosts visitors personally. The estate also serves as a wedding and events venue, with the river and mountain backdrop providing a spectacular natural setting. For those seeking a wine destination that combines genuine frontier winemaking with wilderness luxury, Zoetendal stands alone at the edge of the continent.
