Established in 1994
The name Axe Hill comes from the stone hand tools found on the property — prehistoric artefacts that speak to a human presence in this Klein Karoo valley stretching back thousands of years. The modern story begins in 1994, when Tony Mossop and his wife Lyn planted the first vineyards on an estate on the outskirts of Calitzdorp, the small town widely known as the Port Capital of South Africa. Their first vintage arrived in 1997, and it announced itself immediately: the 1997 Axe Hill Cape Vintage Port received five stars in the John Platter Wine Guide.
Calitzdorp's hot, dry climate and ancient soils share a remarkable kinship with Portugal's Douro Valley, making the region ideal for Portuguese grape varieties and fortified wine production. Tony Mossop understood this instinctively, planting Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz and Souzao and employing traditional methods — foot-treading in lagares for maximum extraction of flavour and colour, then ageing in old French oak barrels.
In 2007, Mike Neebe took ownership of the farm and winery, bringing fresh energy while honouring the legacy Mossop had established. Mike spent a harvest working in the Douro Valley in 2010, deepening his understanding of the Portuguese varieties that define Axe Hill. Under his stewardship the estate won the inaugural Tony Mossop Trophy for Best Cape Vintage Port at the 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show — a fitting tribute to the founder.
The range has expanded beyond fortified wines to include unfortified reds and blends using Portuguese varieties, a Shiraz, a Chenin Blanc called Ambientem, and even a Cellar Red blend. But the ports remain the heart of the operation: Cape Vintage, Cape Ruby, Cape Tawny, Cape Late Bottled Vintage and a Cape White Port all demonstrate the depth of what Calitzdorp terroir can produce.
The tasting room is intimate and unhurried, set against mountain views and the maturation cellar. Dogs are welcome. Private tutored tastings are available, and a tapas menu complements the wines. Closed on Mondays, the estate is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. For those who make the journey into the Klein Karoo, past the Swartberg Pass and into the valley that time forgot, Axe Hill rewards with some of the most authentic and carefully crafted fortified wines in the country — made in the old way, in the right place, by a winemaker who learned his trade in the Douro itself.
Mike Neebe has been winemaker and owner of Axe Hill since 2007. He spent a harvest in Portugal's Douro Valley in 2010, honing the traditional methods — foot-treading in lagares, ageing in old French oak — that define the Axe Hill style. Under his stewardship the estate has expanded beyond fortified wines while maintaining the port quality that earned the inaugural Tony Mossop Trophy.
