Established in 1880
Boplaas Family Vineyards sits in the heart of Calitzdorp, a small town nestled among the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains in the Klein Karoo. The Nel family settled here in the mid-nineteenth century, drawn by the fertile red glacial alluvial soils fed by the Gamka and Olifants rivers — a terroir that would prove ideal for Portuguese grape varieties and the production of fine fortified wines.
The family established their vineyards on Boplaas around 1880, and for generations produced wine quietly in the remote Klein Karoo. The turning point came when Carel Nel took charge. A visionary winemaker who would become a Cape Wine Master, Carel travelled to Portugal and befriended many of the Douro's top Port producers. He brought back insights that transformed Boplaas and helped elevate the entire South African Port category. In 1988, Carel became the first and only winemaker from the southern Cape to be admitted to the Cape Winemakers Guild, a recognition of his outsized contribution to the industry.
The results have been extraordinary. Boplaas has won ten South African Champion Port Trophies, more than any other producer. The Cape Vintage Reserve Port, crafted from hand-harvested Portuguese varietals and built for decades of cellaring, is considered one of the finest fortified wines made in Africa. The Cape Tawny, aged between eight and fifteen years in barrel, and the Vintners Reserve Bin 1880 Tawny represent the pinnacle of patient, traditional winemaking.
But Boplaas is not only about Port. The estate produces acclaimed table wines from Portuguese varieties — Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, and others — as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Carel was also the first winemaker to distil a certified estate brandy in the region, and the pot-stilled brandies have earned their own collection of awards.
Today, the sixth generation of Nels has arrived. Margaux Nel, who completed her MSc in Viticulture from Stellenbosch University studying the terroir of Touriga Nacional, is the winemaker. Rozanne handles marketing. Daniel is the distiller. Together with their father Carel, they have expanded the Boplaas tasting footprint to include outlets in Calitzdorp, Red Berry Farm outside George, and Old Nick Village in Plettenberg Bay.
The Klein Karoo terroir is central to the Boplaas identity. The region's warm, dry climate and the red glacial alluvial soils along the Gamka and Olifants rivers create conditions remarkably similar to Portugal's Douro Valley — which is precisely why Portuguese grape varieties thrive here. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Souzao, and Tinta Francisca all reach exceptional ripeness and concentration on these ancient soils.
Calitzdorp calls itself the Port Capital of South Africa, and no estate has done more to earn that title than Boplaas.
Margaux Nel is the sixth-generation winemaker at Boplaas, having completed her MSc in Viticulture from Stellenbosch University with research on the terroir of Touriga Nacional. She works alongside her father Carel Nel, a Cape Wine Master and the first winemaker from the southern Cape admitted to the Cape Winemakers Guild. Carel's pioneering work with Portuguese varieties and Port elevated the entire South African fortified wine category.
