Deetlefs Wine Estate — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Worcester
Established in 1822
At the foot of the Du Toitskloof Mountains in the Breedekloof Valley, Deetlefs Wine Estate stands as the second-oldest family-owned wine estate in South Africa. The story begins in 1822, when Nicolaas Johannes Deetlefs arrived at De Grootte Eiland in the Goudini area near Rawsonville. His son built the main homestead in 1863 and together with his children established the first winery on the property. Seven generations later, the estate remains firmly in family hands.
Today Kobus Deetlefs, seventh-generation owner and managing director, leads the operation. After graduating from Stellenbosch University in 1986 with a BSc Agric Honours in Wine and Viticulture, he assumed responsibility in 1992 following his father's death. Under his stewardship the estate has grown to 105 hectares under vine, split roughly 60 per cent white and 40 per cent red, producing 1.8 million litres annually. Since 1994 Kobus has driven an export-first strategy, and today more than 85 per cent of Deetlefs wines reach international markets.
The wine portfolio is organised into three distinct ranges. The Stonecross Range offers easy, everyday drinking at accessible prices. The Deetlefs Estate range showcases the terroir of the Breedekloof with varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and a Méthode Cap Classique. The Familie Range sits at the top, reserved for special occasions and crafted from the estate's finest parcels.
Deetlefs holds BWI and WIETA sustainability accreditations, reflecting the family's commitment to environmental stewardship and ethical labour practices. The estate is recognised as a Heritage Estate with a distinctly boutique feel despite its production scale. Private tutored tastings can be arranged by appointment, and the on-site deli and farm shop offers light refreshments. Views stretch across vineyards, farmland, and the surrounding mountain panorama, and visitors can browse the gift shop or order wines through the online store.
The tasting room sits within the cellar complex, open Tuesday to Thursday from 08:00 to 17:00, Monday and Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00, and closed Friday and Sunday. The estate is also a specialist in Cap Classique, Rosé, and vegan wines, with cool-climate conditions in the Breedekloof contributing to wines of notable freshness and acidity. For a family that has been making wine for over two centuries, the philosophy remains simple: consistency, strength, and a bold individual approach in every bottle.
Kobus Deetlefs, seventh-generation owner and winemaker, graduated from Stellenbosch University in 1986 with a BSc Agric Honours in Wine and Viticulture. He took charge of the estate in 1992 and has since built Deetlefs into a globally recognised brand, exporting over 85 per cent of production to international markets while maintaining the family's 200-year tradition of bold, individual winemaking.
