DeMorgenzon Stellenbosch — MCC and more in Stellenbosch
Established in 2003
On the high slopes of the Stellenboschkloof valley, where the morning sun arrives before it reaches any neighbouring farm, DeMorgenzon exists in a state of perpetual music. Baroque compositions by Scarlatti, Albinoni, and Beethoven play from speakers positioned throughout the vineyards, the winery, and the cellar — all day, every day, since 2009. It is perhaps the most distinctive feature of any wine estate in South Africa, and it is entirely characteristic of the couple who created it.
Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum purchased DeMorgenzon in 2003. Hylton, who had founded Classic FM South Africa in 1997, brought his passion for classical music to the farm alongside a conviction that sound vibrations could stimulate vine health. Research from institutions including Bilkent University in Turkey and Colorado Women's College had documented positive effects of classical music on root growth and plant vigour. Whether the vines truly listen is a question the Appelbaums leave open — what is beyond doubt is that DeMorgenzon's vineyards, interspersed with abundant wildflowers, produce fruit of exceptional quality.
The property comprises 91 hectares of landscaped gardens threaded through 55 hectares of carefully tended vineyards. The name means 'the morning sun' in Afrikaans, a reference to the estate's southeast-facing aspect and elevated position that catches first light across the valley. The Appelbaums transformed what they found into a garden vineyard — a place where biodiversity and beauty are cultivated alongside the vines.
The wine portfolio is structured across three tiers. The DMZ range offers accessible, everyday wines — Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir, and Rose — all at a single price point. The Maestro collection, named for the musical theme, presents mid-tier blends in Blue (red), Red (red), and White expressions. At the summit, the Reserve wines — Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon — and the iconic Divas Chenin Blanc represent the estate's finest vineyard parcels. The Reserve Chenin Blanc, made from low-yielding vines planted in 1972, has earned particular acclaim. A Chenin Blanc MCC sparkling rounds out the range.
DeMorgenzon also produces award-winning extra virgin olive oil from estate trees, available in multiple formats. The estate is open seven days a week — Monday to Saturday 10:00-17:00 and Sunday 10:00-16:30 — offering wine tastings, dining, and the chance to wander the garden vineyard while Baroque music plays through the rows.
What the Appelbaums have built at DeMorgenzon is more than a wine estate. It is a philosophical statement about the relationship between art, nature, and agriculture — the idea that beauty in the vineyard translates to beauty in the glass, and that music might be the thread that connects them.
The winemaking team at DeMorgenzon crafts wines across three tiers — DMZ, Maestro, and Reserve — with a particular focus on Chenin Blanc from old vines planted in 1972. The estate's philosophy centres on expressing the unique terroir of the Stellenboschkloof valley's high-altitude, southeast-facing slopes.
