Ernie Els Wines — Where golfing legend meets Helderberg winemaking excellence
Established in 1999
On the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, where Annandale Road climbs through the Bottelary Hills above Stellenbosch, a winery born from an unlikely partnership between sport and wine has earned its place among the Cape's most respected estates. Ernie Els Wines was established in 1999 as a joint venture between the legendary South African golfer Ernie Els and Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede. Both men shared a passion for Bordeaux-style reds, and both understood that the Helderberg's deep, weathered soils and maritime-influenced climate could produce wines to rival the best in the world. The cellar was completed and the first wines were released in the early 2000s.
From the beginning, the winemaking was entrusted to Louis Strydom, who has been with the project since 1998 and is now recognised as one of South Africa's most distinguished winemakers. A graduate of Elsenburg College who honed his craft through vintages in Switzerland and France, Strydom brings a quiet precision to the cellar that belies the estate's high-profile name. He is a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild and chairs its Development Trust, reflecting a deep commitment to the broader South African wine community.
The wine portfolio is structured in four tiers. The Big Easy range, named for Ernie's famous nickname, offers approachable everyday wines: Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Red Blend, a Rose, and the Sweet Spot fortified wine. The Major Series steps up in ambition with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and the Double Red blend, all sourced from estate and select Stellenbosch vineyards. The Proprietor's tier showcases Louis Strydom's finest parcels in a Bordeaux-style Blend and a single-varietal Syrah. At the summit stands the Ernie Els Signature, the estate's icon wine, a Bordeaux blend aged in new French oak and produced only in exceptional vintages. The Signature has earned Platter's five-star recognition and consistently commands international attention.
The estate itself is architecturally striking. Grand granite boulders frame the entrance, and wooden farmhouse-style doors open into a homely, expansive tasting room with panoramic views stretching from Cape Town and Table Mountain to the west to the Helderberg Mountains to the east. The Grillworks restaurant serves farm-to-fork cuisine, while the Chilli Shed offers a more casual dining alternative. Guided cellar tours, self-guided cellar access, private tutored tastings, and art tours round out the visitor experience.
Ernie Els Wines holds both Fairtrade wine producer and Fairtrade Tourism accreditations, reflecting a commitment to ethical production and community development. The estate is dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible, with cycling trails on the property and a golf putt-putt course that nods to the founder's sporting legacy. With over two decades of winemaking under Louis Strydom's steady hand, the estate has long outgrown its celebrity origins to stand on the quality of what is in the bottle.
Louis Strydom has been with Ernie Els Wines since 1998, making him the only winemaker the estate has ever known. A graduate of Elsenburg College in Stellenbosch, he worked at Saxenburg Wine Estate and completed vintages in Switzerland and France before joining the project. He is a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild and chairs its Development Trust. His Bordeaux-inspired approach has earned the Signature wine Platter's five-star ratings and widespread international recognition.
