Precious Hidden Valley — Syrah and more in Stellenbosch
Established in 2002
Nestled on the western slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, Hidden Valley Wines occupies one of Stellenbosch's most dramatic sites. The views from the tasting room sweep across the vineyards to False Bay and the distant Hottentots Holland mountains — a panorama that has drawn visitors since the estate first opened its doors.
The story begins with Dave Hidden, who fell in love with this stretch of land during his university days. In 2002, he planted the first vineyards on the steep Helderberg slopes, working with the decomposed granite and clay soils that define this corner of Stellenbosch. Over the following decade, Hidden shaped the estate's identity around handcrafted, small-batch wines that expressed the altitude and aspect of the site.
In 2015, Dave Hidden sold the property to Riaan Stassen, who continued developing the brand and visitor facilities. Then, in 2022, South African billionaire and mining magnate Patrice Motsepe acquired Hidden Valley, bringing significant investment and international ambition to the estate. Motsepe retained the existing staff and winemaking team, signalling continuity alongside the new ownership's vision to promote Hidden Valley wines to collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
Winemaker Annalie van Dyk leads the cellar programme. Van Dyk brings experience from both Napa Valley in California and the Loire Valley in France, and her approach combines New World fruit expression with Old World structure and restraint. The wine portfolio includes two standout red blends — Hidden Gems and Hidden Secret — alongside single-varietal Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and a fresh Sauvignon Blanc. A rose called Hidden Treasure and a Sauvignon Blanc Viognier blend round out the offering.
The tasting experience at Hidden Valley is designed around those extraordinary views. Premium tastings of five wines are offered daily for R135, and the estate's elevated position on the Annandale Road provides a sense of seclusion that belies its proximity to central Stellenbosch. The property also features a restaurant serving light meals and platters that pair with the estate wines.
The Helderberg location is central to everything Hidden Valley produces. At this altitude, the cooling influence of the nearby ocean slows ripening and preserves natural acidity, giving the reds a structural elegance that distinguishes them from warmer valley-floor sites. The decomposed granite and clay soils provide excellent drainage, forcing vine roots deep into the hillside and concentrating flavour in the berries.
Under Motsepe's stewardship, Hidden Valley is poised for a new chapter — but the bones of the estate remain the same: steep Helderberg slopes, handcrafted wines, and one of the finest outlooks in the Cape Winelands.
