Lovane Boutique Wine Estate and Guest House — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Stellenbosch
On the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch, flanked by the celebrated Neethlingshof and Overgaauw estates, Lovane Boutique Wine Estate occupies a quiet position that belies its ambition. Billing itself as the smallest wine estate in Stellenbosch, Lovane farms just 2.5 hectares of vineyard on what was virgin land when the first vines were planted in 2003.
The estate was established by a family who traded corporate careers for winemaking, drawn to this particular hillside by its deep soils and the microclimate that the Polkadraai corridor creates between Stellenbosch Mountain and False Bay. The plantings are focused: 90 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5 per cent each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. That single-minded devotion to Bordeaux varietals is unusual for the region, and it defines everything Lovane does.
The flagship wine is Isikhati, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The name means 'time' in isiZulu, and the wine rewards it -- the 2020 vintage earned a Double Gold at the Veritas Awards, following a Gold for the 2015. It is a wine of serious structure and patience, built for cellaring. Alongside the reds, the estate produces a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, a fragrant Chenin Blanc, the Theresa Rose, a Cape Ruby port-style wine, and a varietal Pinotage.
Visitors taste in the underground cellar, a cool stone space carved into the hillside where the maturation barrels rest. The standard tasting offers five wines for R50 per person, while the wine and chocolate pairing at R85 adds a layer of indulgence. Winemaker Hennie continues to refine his craft with each vintage, earning growing recognition in the Stellenbosch wine community.
Above the cellar, the estate operates as a boutique guesthouse accommodating up to 32 guests. Rooms offer balconies or terraces with views across the Polkadraai Hills, and the rate includes breakfast. An outdoor swimming pool, free Wi-Fi, and the unhurried pace of a working wine farm complete the picture. A conference facility seating 20 is available for corporate retreats, with various lunch packages on offer.
Lovane is not a place of grand architecture or trophy vintages. It is a place where a small family makes serious wine from a focused vineyard, pours it in an underground cellar, and sends guests home with something worth remembering.
Unfussy rooms with balconies or terraces, plus free breakfast, an outdoor pool and wine tastings.
Winemaker Hennie has built Lovane's reputation through meticulous attention to the estate's focused Bordeaux plantings. His Isikhati blend has earned Double Gold (2020 vintage) and Gold (2015 vintage) at the Veritas Awards, reflecting a patient, terroir-driven approach to winemaking on the Polkadraai Hills.
