Marras Wines — Chenin Blanc and Rosé in Swartland
Martin Lamprecht grew up in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, far from any vineyard. But a love for good food and wine drew him to Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute, where he graduated as the top male student in 2010 with a cum laude in cellar technology. He trained under David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg Wines, then left for the Northern Rhone Valley in France to study the old-vine Syrah and Grenache traditions that would shape everything he would later do. When he returned to South Africa, he made his way to the Voor-Paardeberg and worked at Doran Vineyards, falling in with the maverick winemakers of the Swartland Independent Producers.
The nickname Marras — South African slang for a close friend or mate — stuck, and it became the name on the label. Martin set up in a restored Victorian building on Voortrekker Road in Riebeek West, a town that has become a hub for the new wave of Swartland winemakers. His approach is simple and uncompromising: find the most fascinating parcels of old bush vine grapes across the Swartland and Piekenierskloof, and let each varietal express itself fully in the cellar with minimal interference.
The results are wines of remarkable clarity and personality. The Los Tros Chenin Blanc, sourced from ancient Swartland bush vines, is lean, tight, and mineral-driven — a wine that captures the sunbaked granite and clay soils of the region. The Blombos Rose from Piekenierskloof is impossibly light at ten percent alcohol, a wine named after the wild flowers and rooibos that bloom in the elevated terroir where the grapes are grown. The red blend of Shiraz and Cinsault delivers ripe plum, rose petal, and smoke — the Swartland in a glass.
The tasting room and restaurant in Riebeek West have become a destination in their own right. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, the space combines wine with South African cuisine in a relaxed, unpretentious setting that reflects Martin's philosophy: wine is about connection, about sharing, about nothing else. Accommodation is available for visitors who want to linger in the Riebeek Valley. Cellar tours and vineyard walks round out an experience that takes visitors deep into the heart of the Swartland revolution.
