Rainbow's End Wine Estate — Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in Stellenbosch
Established in 1978
High on the slopes above the Banghoek Valley, where the Jonkershoek mountains form a dramatic amphitheatre around Stellenbosch's most sheltered vineyards, Rainbow's End tells the story of a family who found their treasure not in gold but in granite soils and mountain air.
Jacques Malan purchased the property in 1978 with a long-held dream of growing vines. A civil engineer by trade, he waited more than two decades before the dream took root. In 2000, Jacques and his family planted 22 hectares of vineyards on high-lying slopes reaching 540 metres above sea level, where decomposed granite soils, cool mountain breezes, and wide diurnal temperature swings create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. The maiden vintage, a Shiraz, was released in 2002.
Today the estate is run by Jacques's sons: Anton Malan serves as winemaker and cellar master, while his brother Francois manages the vineyards as viticulturist. Anton honed his craft working in Olivier Laporte's vineyards and cellar at Chateau Croix Beausejour in France's Saint-Emilion, an experience that cemented his affinity for Cabernet Franc, a variety that has become Rainbow's End's calling card.
The winemaking philosophy combines old-world restraint with new-world ambition. Grapes are hand-harvested, open-fermented, basket-pressed, and matured for twelve months in small French oak barrels. The approach is deliberately non-interventionist, letting the Banghoek terroir speak through each vintage.
The portfolio is structured around single varietals and a flagship blend. The estate range includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and the standout Cabernet Franc. Above these sits the Limited Release Cabernet Franc, selected from the finest parcels, and the Family Reserve, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Shiraz that represents the pinnacle of each vintage. A Cabernet Franc Blanc de Noir and Chenin Blanc round out the offering.
Rainbow's End also produces Mystical Corner, a special single-vineyard wine from a unique parcel on the estate. The farm's intimate scale means production remains small, and the tasting room offers a personal, unhurried experience. Tastings cost R150 for five wines, waived with a purchase of R750 per person.
The estate's elevation, its position backing onto the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, and the family's hands-on stewardship combine to produce wines of distinctive character. This is a boutique operation in the truest sense, where two brothers carry forward their father's dream one vintage at a time, crafting wines that reward patience and reflect the unique character of one of Stellenbosch's most elevated and dramatic vineyard sites.
Anton Malan is the winemaker and cellar master at Rainbow's End. He trained at Chateau Croix Beausejour in Saint-Emilion, France, under Olivier Laporte, which deepened his affinity for Cabernet Franc. Anton combines traditional techniques — hand harvesting, open fermentation, basket pressing — with a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the Banghoek terroir to express itself in each vintage.
