Slanghoek Cellar -- Top 10 Chenin Blanc from the mountain valley, since 1951
Established in 1951
Slanghoek Cellar was established in 1951 by 25 founding members in the Slanghoek Valley, one of the most scenic corners of the Breedekloof wine region. The cellar sits at approximately 800 metres above sea level, surrounded by the majestic Slanghoek Mountains, and this altitude combined with the valley's natural amphitheatre of peaks creates conditions well suited to both delicate whites and robust reds. The altitude is significant: cooler nights at 800m help grapes retain the natural acidity that gives Slanghoek's whites their characteristic freshness and elegance.
The cooperative harvests around 42,000 tons of grapes per year, making it a significant player in the South African wine industry. Only about 2 percent of production is bottled under the Slanghoek label, with the remainder supplied to other clients within the industry -- a quiet testament to the quality of fruit these mountain vineyards produce. The bottled range spans 14 varieties: Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Rose, Natural Sweet, White Blend, Sparkling, and Dessert Wine. The Cabernet Franc is an uncommon variety for the Breedekloof, reflecting the winemaking team's confidence in the valley's terroir.
Slanghoek has earned a place in the South African Top 10 Chenin Blanc Awards, and is a member of the Breedekloof Makers group of 13 wineries. To qualify for Breedekloof Makers, each cellar must produce one premium Chenin Blanc known as 'The Expected' -- typically from single vineyards or old vines, fermented in barrels, amphora clay pots, or cement eggs. This commitment positions Slanghoek at the forefront of the Breedekloof's emerging reputation as South Africa's Chenin Blanc heartland.
The tasting experience at Slanghoek includes the chance to participate in 'Blend and Bottle' sessions, where visitors blend their own bottle of wine under the guidance of the winemaking team. This hands-on workshop demystifies winemaking and sends guests home with a truly personal souvenir. The beautifully appointed tasting centre, restaurant serving French cuisine, and guest house accommodation make this a full-day or overnight destination.
Outdoor enthusiasts are well served. Five hiking trails of varying difficulty start and end at the cellar, crossing streams and bridges, and passing through a game camp where visitors may encounter antelope. A redesigned mountain bike route winds along the mountains, through vineyards, and alongside mountain streams -- with the chance to spot springbok along the way. The Breedekloof Camino walking trail also connects through the valley, linking Slanghoek to other wine farms.
Slanghoek Cellar is wheelchair accessible and welcomes visitors Monday to Friday 09h00-17h00 and Saturday 10h00-14h00. Closed Sundays.
Slanghoek's winemaking team manages production from 42,000 tons of grapes harvested annually, bottling the top 2% under the Slanghoek label. The team's Chenin Blanc has earned South African Top 10 recognition, and their 'Blend and Bottle' sessions invite visitors into the craft of winemaking.
