Spier Wine Farm — Crafting wines since 1692
Established in 1692
Spier is a regenerative wine farm in Stellenbosch, just 40 minutes from Cape Town, where wine has been made since 1692. The cellar — the oldest dated cellar still in use in South Africa — sits within 650 hectares of restored indigenous renosterveld and fynbos.
For over three centuries, Spier Wine Farm has been more than just a farm — it's a living, breathing testament to the power of community, regeneration, and shared growth. Guided by a simple maxim of "good wine from good people grown in good soil," the estate has evolved from one of the very first farms established in Stellenbosch into a destination where heritage meets innovation.
The farm is a playground for all ages. Children explore the Elemental Play Garden — designed by landscape architect Ed Brooks and featuring four quadrants of water, air, fire, and earth, intersected by a waterway symbolising the Fibonacci Sequence. The whole family can wander through pastures and vineyards on foot, bike, or Segway, while art lovers discover soaring sculptures and contemporary canvases from the Spier Art Collection — one of the largest in the country.
As you wander around the farm, you'll find the old alongside the new: a beautifully restored Manor, an array of 21 Cape Dutch gables — more than any other farm in the country — and ancient oaks first planted in 1682. From award-winning wines to a contemporary art collection, heritage at Spier isn't preserved in amber — it's alive and evolving.
The 80-room hotel has been reimagined with a world-class Wellness Spa featuring a Cape Herbal Bath House using botanicals grown on the farm, an expanded pool and bar, a rooftop bar, and a new restaurant focusing on iconic South African cuisine. Stay to taste internationally awarded wines and food from the gardens and pastures, appreciate South African art and local craft, and explore wine heritage spanning more than three centuries.
Johan Jordaan leads the Spier winemaking team with a philosophy rooted in regenerative farming, working with nature to make distinctive wines from every carefully picked vine row. In 2025, he earned the prestigious title of Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker, recognising his dedication to South Africa's signature white varietal. Chenin Blanc is Spier's calling card — the grape that best expresses their terroir and team spirit.
The story of Spier Wine Farm through the years
Long before Spier was a name, the area was home to the hunter-gatherer San people. Their history is a vital part of the land's story.
The Cochoqua people of the pastoral Khoikhoi nations graze their livestock in the region and build their homesteads along the rivers.
The Cape of Good Hope was founded by Dutch navigator Jan van Riebeeck, leading to the first vines being planted in the Cape.
Stellenbosch became known for its majestic oaks, planted on the advice of Simon van der Stel. Many of these ancient oaks still grow on Spier today, including the grand oak at the heart of the werf.
Governor Simon van der Stel signs the first Spier Title Deed, granting the property to Arnoud Jansz. One of the very first farms established in Stellenbosch.
Over 30,000 vines flourish on the estate, marking Spier as one of the region's most significant wine producers.
The Slave Bell, built near the Eerste River, today stands on the farm as a poignant reminder of a painful past and an ongoing commitment to addressing historical injustices.
The Stellenbosch Wine Route is established by Neil Joubert from Spier, Frans Malan from Simonsig and Spatz Sperling from Delheim — a milestone in South African wine tourism.
The Enthoven family begins guiding Spier's evolution with a clear vision: honouring the past while building a more inclusive future.
Following a three-year conversion process, the farm harvests its first organic grapes after achieving organic certification in 2014.
Spier wins the Ethical Award at the International Drinks Business Green Awards, recognising decades of sustainability commitment.
Cellar Master Johan Jordaan earns the title of Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker — a milestone for the entire Spier team.
Spier's sustainability journey spans over 30 years of ecological restoration grounded in soil health. The farm achieved organic certification in 2014 after a three-year conversion, and its 650 hectares include restored indigenous renosterveld and fynbos. The hotel is surrounded by rewilded fynbos gardens along the Eerste River. Spier holds Fairtrade Tourism accreditation, WWF sustainability certification, IPW membership, and WIETA ethical labour accreditation. In 2022, they won the Ethical Award at the International Drinks Business Green Awards.
