Vinevenom — Views and vines in Swartland
Established in 2015
VineVenom is the creation of Samantha Suddons, a Swartland-based natural winemaker operating out of Riebeek-Wes. The brand sits squarely in the new wave of South African winemaking -- low intervention, unconventional varieties, flor-aged whites, and a deliberate rejection of the polished estate model. There is no grand tasting room or manicured vineyard here. VineVenom is a garagiste label with an outsized reputation.
Suddons made her debut with Serenade, a Cap Classique sparkling wine from the 2015 vintage that announced her arrival with immediate critical attention. Greg Sherwood MW described her as hitting the big time with that first release -- high praise from one of South Africa's most influential wine writers. The sparkling wine set the tone for a portfolio that would be defined by ambition and idiosyncrasy in equal measure.
The current range is built around Swartland fruit, sourced primarily from the Paardeberg. The Silence Chenin Blanc is made solera-style and aged under flor for twelve months, producing a bone-dry, sherry-influenced white that is unlike almost anything else in the South African Chenin landscape. The Skin Chenin Blanc takes a different approach -- extended skin contact that has earned recognition from Decanter and placement among South Africa's finest Chenins. The Shining is a dry rose made from Carignan and Touriga Nacional in an oxidative, Spanish-inspired style. Satellites is a light red blend.
Most of Suddons' releases are non-vintage, reflecting the solera and blending approach she favours. Production is tiny and allocations sell quickly. VineVenom is a member of the Swartland Independent Producers, the collective of small-scale winemakers who have put the region on the global fine wine map.
VineVenom does not operate a public tasting room. Wines are available through specialist retailers, online wine shops, and occasionally at Swartland Revolution and similar industry events.
Samantha Suddons is the sole winemaker and owner of VineVenom, based in Riebeek-Wes in the Swartland. She specialises in low-intervention winemaking with a particular affinity for flor-aged Chenin Blanc, skin-contact whites, and unconventional blends using Carignan, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah.
